Hanging out with Ignite Sports

If I had to describe the Ignite Sports Fusion program in three words, I would say diversity, fun, and enthusiasm. But honestly, I don’t think three words could truly capture what it’s like to be part of the Fusion program, so let me share my experience.

At ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum, we strongly believe in partnerships with other agencies, and one of them is Ignite Sport, a youth organization that utilizes sports as a vehicle to inspire and support young people in making wise choices and reaching their potential. Among their various programs, they have a special one called Fusion, a three-day activity designed to foster greater connection for young people with a refugee background. Fusion is open to youth aged 14 to 24 and is completely free of charge. To address transportation barriers, Ignite Sports offers pick-ups and drop-offs, making the program more accessible for young people and their families. Snacks are also provided throughout the three days, so if you’re concerned about food, that’s covered. When registering for the program, Ignite Sports collects dietary requirements to ensure they can provide appropriate food, such as halal, vegan, gluten-free, and more.

After being picked up in town, we headed off to Ignite Sports’ new facilities in Lower Hutt, which include a modern playground for basketball, football, volleyball, and even tennis (just kidding about the tennis!). The new building has spacious rooms suitable for workshops and an indoor wooden court that can be used to play games, especially if the weather isn’t great. Oops, I almost forgot to mention that there is a kitchen, and upstairs are the offices where Ignite Sports work their magic!

Be prepared to participate and play a variety of games. One of the sections was led by the stellar Kevin Goldsburry, the boss! The games were fun and competitive, as they should be. We also played football and jockey (on turf, without the ice) – how cool is that! But the main idea is to ensure everyone gets involved, and that’s what makes Ignite Sport special because they know how to do it.

In between the excitement of the games and the highly competitive spirit, Ignite Sports planned some workshops for the youth. One of these workshops was a kōreroabout identity, hope, and aspirations. Everyone received a piece of paper to share their personal stories of where they came from and their dreams. Every single story was unique and inspiring. Another noteworthy workshop focused on the importance of pronouncing names properly. It served as a reminder that each name is special and holds valuable meaning, and therefore, we should all make an effort to learn to pronounce and spell others’ names correctly.

ChangeMakers was thrilled to be part of Fusion and witness how our young, future leaders are developing their skills. We look forward to working together with Ignite Sport and seeing you all in the next Fusion program.
