Family Reunification

In July 2009, ChangeMakers published a discussion paper about the issues surrounding family reunification. We produced the paper with three other agenices - Refugee Family Reunification Trust, Wellington Community Law Centre and Wellington Refugees as Survivors Trust (RAS).

The catalyst for this paper was an astonishing clientele statistic from Wellington RAS. Of the 32 families helped by the Refugee Family Reunification Trust to reunite with their families left behind overseas, 93% were discharged from the RAS service once they had been reunited with their families!

Using this information and consultation over many years with refugee communities, the paper identifies family reunification as the most important issue for former refugees trying to settle successfully in New Zealand. We hope this paper will provoke discussion by politicians and decision makers and result in some sound decisions to bring about much needed change.
