New Zealanders from refugee backgrounds participating fully in New Zealand life
Family reunification in Wellington
ChangeMakers and partner agencies have been working on improving family reunification processes since 2009 after publishing a discussion paper highlighting the challenges of refugee families being reunited in Aotearoa NZ.
ChangeMakers, Refugee Trauma Recovery, the Refugee Family Reunification Trust, the Community Law Centre, and the Red Cross meet quarterly with Immigration New Zealand to highlight ongoing concerns and discuss solutions highlighted in the 2009 paper. Recent improvements have included applicants being able to gain required medical clearance at the end of the process, reducing unnecessary expense and travel. We continue to work on these issues to enable more refugees reunite with their families.
Our Board is governed by people from refugee backgrounds who represent the interests of former refugees generally rather then their communities specifically. We also have 20% representation from other communities.
